VERONA, Wis. – People shopping for fireworks should expect less of a bang for their buck this year.

Andrew Olbrecht and Adeline Campion, the co-owners of Savior Fireworks in Verona, said their business has faced high prices when it comes to buying products to sell to their customers.

“Last year there was a substantial hike with all the COVID-19 logistic issues as well, but this year they took another hike, depending on the product, from 20-40%,” Olbrecht said.

“Some people were getting smaller orders because it’s a little cheaper to get them,” Campion said.

Phantom Fireworks is one of the largest retailers in the country. CEO Bruce Zoldan told CBS News , “We had to raise our prices.”

Many of the products at Phantom Fireworks are from overseas and shipping costs have skyrocketed.

“In 2019, we paid approximately $11,000 a container, and this year we’re paying close to $40,000 a container,” Zoldan said to CBS News.

“Last month away from getting the product shipped from China, they told us it was going to be $5,000 more per container,” Olbrecht said.

However, Savior Fireworks isn’t hiking prices for its customers to respond to the problem. They’ve lost money on their end trying to keep their customers happy and keep prices low.

“We kept everything the same price or we actually lowered our prices for customers to try to help them,” Olbrecht said.

“I think people are spending money on food and other things this year,” Campion said.

“Gas prices are at $4-6 a gallon, groceries are going up, we just wanted to make it so people could still have a little fun,” Olbrecht said.

These business owners hope that keeping prices lower this year will help customers make sure they are still able to celebrate the Fourth of July.

“Next year we hope to have our same customers back, and we want everyone to have some fireworks for the holidays to make sure they can afford them,” Olbrecht said.
