Don't Fold Your Hands And Wait For Buhari Government To Protect You, Defend Yourselves Like Americans, Chinese – Governor Masari | Sahara Reporters

The Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari has again called on Nigerians to take up arms and learn to defend themselves from bandits and terrorists like Americans and Chinese because the Nigerian Army and the police cannot protect them against armed bandits.

Masari is the governor of President Muhammadu Buhari's home state.

Governor Masari made the call on Monday while speaking at the 2022 special prayer session in commemoration of ‘Yaumush Shukur’ (thanksgiving) day for Katsina, Peoples Gazette reports.

He lamented that “The security challenges we are facing in terms of killings and kidnappings are not only limited to Katsina or Nigeria, but they happen everywhere, even in America and China. But their citizens don’t fold their arms and wait for the government.

“Don’t lock yourselves inside and say it is the responsibility of the government or police to defend you: how many people will the police defend? But if you defend yourself, it will reduce the work of policemen and soldiers.”

Governor Masari earlier charged residents of the state to use anything they had including their teeth to defend themselves against armed bandits.

Governor Masari’s call comes a few weeks after Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara and Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo encouraged their people to get arms and defend themselves against bandits and terrorists.

Meanwhile, SaharaReporters reported that the Chief of Defence Staff, Lucky Irabor, faulted Governor Matawalle’s call for the commissioner of police in his state to issue gun licences to the residents of the state, saying the governor and his colleagues lack the powers to direct police commissioners to issue gun licences to residents as a measure to tackle insecurity.

Nigeria's security architecture is centralised, meaning the police and other security agencies are under the control of the Federal Government, led by President Buhari. Calls made by some governors and some other Nigerians to decentralise the police have fallen on deaf ears as the Buhari's government has failed to show any commitment to approving state police.
