The main tower in Croydon’s latest tallest building is nearly complete.

Two new towers in College Road will offer more than 930 new flats to the borough when construction has finished.

The pair of skyscrapers standing at 49- and 34-storeys tall will become the highest in the borough. 

At 150 metres, the structure will be 15 metres taller than Croydon’s current tallest building, 101 George Street, and known as Ten Degrees.

The same companies are behind the latest venture.

Next to East Croydon Station, the development will include 817 co-living and 120 regular flats offered as shared ownership.

It is being built using modular construction – meaning rooms are made off site before then stacked onto central cores, the long thin rowers already shooting into the skyline.

Developer HTA claims that this way of building is more environmentally friendly and can produce 40 per cent less CO2 than traditional methods.

Rory Bergin, prtner for sustainable futures at the company, said: “Modular is the future of housebuilding.

“Two of the biggest challenges our country faces are tackling the climate crisis and the acute shortage of housing.

"Building modular homes is quicker, safer, more reliable and more environmentally friendly than traditional housing construction methods.”

An updated application to Croydon Council shows that work on the buildings is currently taking place over longer hours, from 8am-8pm Monday to Friday and from 8am-1pm on Saturdays.

This will be the case until the end of June when working hours will end at 6pm on weekdays.

Work started in December 2020 and it is expected to be completed by June 2023.

The plans were approved by Croydon Council in February 2020.

The co-living flats are self-contained rooms and sharing communal spaces including a gym, residents’ lounge, library, party kitchens and a cinema room.

The plans from include a colonnade pathway between East Croydon and College Green for cyclists and pedestrians.
